Treatment for Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR)
Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory disease that mainly affects older adults and causes pain and stiffness in the shoulders, neck, upper back and/or hips. It affects more women than men and more Caucasians than other races. It typically occurs between 50 and 70 years of age.
Symptoms of Polymyalgia Rheumatica
The symptoms are caused by joint and tissue inflammation, which can occur gradually or suddenly. Morning stiffness and inactivity exacerbate the stiffness and may lead to muscle weakness. Common areas of pain include the buttocks, hips, neck, thighs and upper arms. Other symptoms include fatigue, fever, loss of appetite and weight loss. PMR may be associated with giant cell arteritis, which is characterised by persistent headaches, scalp tenderness, visual disturbances or jaw pain when eating — warning signs that require immediate attention.
Causes of Polymyalgia Rheumatica
The exact cause of PMR is still unclear, although it is considered an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks healthy tissue. It is suspected that genetic factors and infections play a role. Age may also play a role, as PMR is rare in people under the age of 50.
Treatment of Polymyalgia Rheumatica
The treatment of PMR focuses on relieving pain and inflammation and reducing stiffness, pain, fatigue and fever. Treatment includes anti-inflammatory medication and physical therapy. Book your appointment.
The DBC Protocol
The DBC treatment program emphasises the importance of personalised exercise program that target the areas affected by PMR. These targeted exercises not only help to manage symptoms, but also contribute to increased strength, flexibility and overall mobility.
Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in improving range of motion, relieving pain and improving overall functionality. Biokinetics, with its focus on corrective movements and exercises, aims to restore biomechanical function and promote long-term well-being.
